Heaven

I have a vast and ever-growing archive of cam-drone stills, because New Eden is a staggeringly beautiful part of the cosmos when viewed through the visual enhancements and augmentations that are intrinsic to being jacked into a ship through a neural link. In fact it is an aesthetic unavailable to baseliners as it is not possible to, for example, view the galactic plane with a star in direct line-of-sight. But that is not the point of this journal.

I was reviewing some of this archive on a datapad while I was enjoying some downtime in 'Gottin's Lamp', which is SFRIM's bar in our HQ in the Mehatoor system (in the 24th IC station). I came across some stills from an excursion I'd taken some four years ago and which I'd completely forgotten about: a flight through the Heaven constellation in Curse.  

The Heaven constellation is of course the former home of the First and Second Jove Empires. Then the Jovian Disease happened and the Jovians departed the constellation, leaving the afflicted behind to die, believing they had escaped the Disease - or the 'Curse' that the region is named after. What happened to them after that is history. Or speculation, or rumour, or myth.

The Jove homeworld itself was Utopia III. I came here just because I wanted to visit it. Just because I could visit it.

I knew I would find no trace of the Jove here. Only the Cartel.

I docked in a station orbiting Utopia VI and took some quarters for a couple of days, and just hung out here, with no specific intent. The station was Cartel - an assembly plant for Dramiels and their other designs, that may or may not have benefited from whatever relics the Cartel found here when they moved in.

Centuries have passed since the Jove were here. There is zero trace of their existence now, yet their ghosts - or the suggestion of them - are all around. Or maybe it's all in my mind, given that I read about them so much.

We know where they went. Whether any of them exist at all today is not certain after the events of Caroline's Star and the collapse of the gates in the three regions we knew they inhabited.

It's possible - and there is evidence to suggest it - that the Drifters and those Sleeper artifacts are and were Jovian evolutionary offshoots. Other certain 'Emergent Threats' of the last couple of years mean the Jove are becoming a fading memory of decreasing relevance. How much influence the Society of Conscious Thought - their successors in CONCORD - has within New Eden culture today is uncertain. 

There are still stations all over New Eden that are owned and run by corporations and organisations that were Jovian in origin. Who owns and runs them now..?

Curse is now a pirate-infested wasteland. All that exists here now is destruction and decay. To think that it really was once a Utopia of pure technology and transhumanism. 

But now, who the hell cares..?

The Eye of the Hurricane

24th Imperial Crusade Advanced Tactical and Strategic Frigate Doctrines, Vol III 

 

LUMEN has resumed fleet patrols of the warzone since the Pochven campaign ended. Our most spectacular 'kill' during the first of this new series of operations was the ambush and destruction of a Hurricane-class battlecruiser, no less, in the Hadozeko system, deep within the Minmatar border zone.

The Hurricane should have been able to make short work of a fleet of frigates, but it was God's will that we should prevail and take advantage of a few tactical errors that the Hurricane's capsuleer commander made during the engagement, most notably not ensuring the destruction of Directrix Lunarisse Aspenstar's Crucifier Navy Issue first, which used its optimised Targeting Disruptors to stop the Hurricane from tracking any of us properly, preventing it from destroying more than the single one of our ships that it did kill - kudos and in fact probably an official commendation to Faith Griffiths for sacrificing her ship by being first on the scene to tackle the Hurricane so that the rest of us could bring it down. 

The Hurricane's commander probably also should not have completely ignored me, for my Tormentor-class frigate TES Fair Warning cut through his armor and hull like a knife through butter once his shields were down, since my ship was outputting over 200 'dps' with Tech II-class Pulse Lasers. It must be said that I did have to nearly melt those guns through overheating them in order to achieve that firepower. And of course I was not the only one there. I'd be very interested to know exactly how much cumulative damage-per-second our fleet of seven frigates applied to the Hurricane. It is noteworthy that mine and Amicia Cora's Tormentors both applied over 56% of the total damage to the Hurricane, according to the independent 'zkill' statistics service. The class's reputation as a point-blank range brawling monster is justified.

Every fight is a learning experience. In the heat of the moment I made at least one mistake: basically forgetting I had ECM drones on board and not using them; although it is questionable what good they would have done against a battlecruiser, but by not using them at all, they did nothing.

But such perfectionism should not detract from the fact that this was an extremely well-planned and executed ambush by our fleet, where the odds were actually not in our favour. 

Our faith in God's will ensured we had the skill and bravery to win this fight.

Peace In Our Time

 

- is perhaps an optimistic and even unrealistic attitude to take in the long term (especially with respect to recent 'Emergent Threats'...), but given the status of the border systems between the Empire and the Tribal Hordes and the CONCORD-refereed 'eternal war' between us and them, we must rejoice in the fact that right now all the systems on the Empire's side of the border are safely under the Empire's control and authority once again.

Also, a number of systems on the other side of the border are currently being repossessed and indeed Reclaimed from the Tribal Hordes and will, if God wills it, stay that way, and the proper status quo will return - namely that the Empire will prevail once again and we will be able to reintroduce what our enemies refer to as 'slavery' - which is merely the imposition of the structure and discipline that humanity needs in order to thrive. 

It would also seem that our allies in the State are pushing the Fed back to where they belong. If this resurgence of our two sides is anything to do with Empress Catiz I and her efforts to forge a closer alliance with the State after her ascension to the Throne of Amarr, then the future is indeed bright.

Into The Domain of Pochven

LUMEN historically took a defensive posture with respect to addressing threats to the Empire, preferring to operate within its borders and within the warzone and reacting to events as necessary, 'being the shield rather than the sword'.

LUMEN took the side of EDENCOM during the Triglavian Invasion, sharing that organisation's defeat when the 'Final Liminality' took place and removed four systems from the Empire (along with all the others of course) and placed them under the yoke of the ungodly, beyond-heretical and abominable Triglavian Collective, whatever the hell those things are that speak in arcane and indecipherable riddles of wilful pomposity.

All of the above was before my time in LUMEN as I was on my two-year sabbatical. I have, until last week, had nothing whatsoever to do with the 'Trigs' and their space except for one brief encounter with one of their wormhole portals to the Pochven region which I found in the Villore system a couple of months ago and was like nothing I've ever seen before:

This thing appears to have needed an asteroid to provide some sort of mass or material, distorting it, stretching it, with God knows what quantum effects going on at the focal point producing this wormhole. 

 

This year, as detailed previously, LUMEN has taken a very proactive position with respect to the Triglavians and their sympathisers/sycophants/handmaidens. The result is joining an alliance of alliances led by Electus Matari - of all people - in an aggressive campaign within the Pochven region against the capsuleer alliance Stribog Clade, who declare themselves aligned with the Collective and in possession of a number of industrial facilities in Pochven.

The problem, for them, is that ever since the creation of the Pochven region, no new structures of any kind have been built there; all the structures that are currently there were already present before the 'Final Liminality' took place.

We have been aggressively targeting the structures belonging to Stribog Clade and hitting them relentlessly for a few weeks now. 

Joining these operations required me to actually go there...

So this account describes just one of those operations against a Stribog structure in the Senda system, in again as much declassified detail as I can reveal.

Operation Firefly II

Our fleet consisted of Harbinger-class battlecruisers and Guardian-class logistics cruisers. My ship was the TES Reventador. I'm not used to operating big ships. I'm not used to marshalling a crew, so I tend to delegate a lot. But then a capsuleer-controlled battlecruiser has fewer crew on it anyway (still several hundred, mind), and they are reduced to a care-and-maintenance and watchkeeping role as the capsuleer performs the roles of several of the ship's departments from within their own heads and their neural links, and could essentially run the ship themselves, if it wasn't so damned big. Stuff breaks and needs replacing, fixing, etc..

But I digress...

Our fleet departed our Astrahus in the Mehatoor system and we assembled at a 'safe', still in Mehatoor and well out of the ecliptic and far away from any gravitational influences. We tested our systems, ran a few drills, then our fleet commander Zek gave the word -

- because we used the other method of gaining entry to the Pochven region: a 'Home-15 'Pochven' Filament' device, warping us all en masse simultaneously through our own self-generated hyperspace conduit -

- into this place...

...where I was stunned at how much the environment had been altered by this Collective, who have the power to manipulate the output of a star and transform its very matter into something else - controlling it.

The Anoikis Cluster has an ancient, decayed, static vibe where the threat seems remote because the Anoikis Cluster is over a thousand light-years from New Eden; we can get there, but it can't get to us. 

Pochven is right here, among us. All those systems used to be part of New Eden before they were changed by these transhumanised monsters who are self-evidently decades if not centuries ahead of us technologically.

We have the power and ability to access higher dimensions of space by digging holes in the quantum foam of spacetime to make our jump bridges, stargates, FTL drives and fluid router comms; but the power to control the output of a star and reconfigure the environment around it to suit one's purposes is on another level entirely.

It is godlike.

It is scary.

Now I was here, within it.

We transited to our target in the Senda system. This operation was an 'Armor Timer'. We needed to disrupt the structure's defences to the point where we could come back a few days later to finish it. We warped in and got to work: 

Shooting structures is not difficult, and can even be tedious. 

But not this time. Stribog could show up at any minute to defend.

We waited for them as we hammered the structure with Heavy Beams and drones. 

We kept waiting...

We were fully prepared for a response from Stribog Clade, but in this case we caught them completely by surprise. It took them so long to form a fleet from wherever else they were stationed (not in the Senda system) that we were able to finish the job and get out of there just as their response fleet entered the system.

What we were not going to do, which would be the mark of the amateur, would be to exit the system through its access wormhole, which Stribog would of course camp on as their first tactic. 

Instead we were going to exfiltrate, or egress, or exit the system back to New Eden using the same Filament method we used to get in here - far classier, far more sneaky and devious and far more stylish. But we had to wait approximately fifteen minutes for our ships' navigational systems to recalibrate and reconfigure in order to use the Filament device. 

So in an absolutely brilliant masterpiece of planning and execution and leadership and coolness under pressure, we used a series of tactical 'safes' - random positions in space that had been laid down previously throughout the Senda system, dozens of them - to bounce the fleet around the system in unpredictable directions while we waited the necessary fifteen minutes, and in order to evade the Stribog response fleet (such as it was) that was attempting to locate us using Combat Scan Probes - a tactic we anticipated, hence the 'safes'.

It was the longest fifteen minutes of my life, and if I could have bitten my nails while jacked into a capsule then I would have because the tension was incredible. I don't think the result was ever in doubt though; I don't believe Stribog would ever have caught any of us: we were too good, too quick, too elusive, too well-planned, although we did see Combat Scan Probes get within 1 AU of us as the fifteen minutes finally ran out.

All our timers reached zero. 

We were ready.

For this we all carried a 'Glorification-1 'Devana' Filament' device in our ships. There was no need to jump out of there as a fleet this time, so the order was 'Drop fleet and use the Filament'. 

'Dropping fleet' was simply offlining my ship from the data network any fleet uses to communicate and coordinate itself.

Using the Filament device was another matter entirely. It opened up another hyperspace conduit, as before, that looked very different from those generated by a stargate.

And so we just disappeared...

The condition of using one of these devices is that you have no control over where you emerge from hyperspace, other than it generally tends to be in a system that the Triglavian Collective occupied during their invasion (before Pochven was created).

TES Reventador arrived back in New Eden in the Aldik system, in Metropolis. The Republic. Not actually that far from HQ in Mehatoor and all-highsec all the way back. I was relatively lucky. Some of us ended up half way across the cluster in Aridia.

Nevertheless, we all made it out of there, intact, with no damage and no losses of either ships or crew. A fantastic result, and celebrations all round as and when we all got back to Mehatoor.

I set course, and let the ship fly itself, glad to be out of that place... 

Epilogue

All of what I've described above took place a couple of weeks ago. At the time of releasing this journal, our campaign in Pochven is effectively over. Our ad-hoc alliance of alliances destroyed several of Stribog Clade's structures, rendered the rest effectively useless and forced Stribog to resort to evacuating the region, self-destructing their remaining assets and publicly blaming Electus Matari for their defeat. I will not burden you with any of the details of the fallout from it; you can find it on all the usual independent capsuleer comms networks and all the usual news resources, and read it for yourself. 

To listen to Stribog's rhetoric, one would think that Electus Matari was the sole aggressor, which it was not. Some in LUMEN are aggrieved by this lack of credit. I tend to think that our 'anonymity' in this affair is advantageous, because our standing in the wider cluster and our regular and future operations will not be negatively influenced.

I only played a small part in this campaign. Our leadership and many of our members were present for the whole thing, the most noteworthy and consequential being a 'suicide mission' on another Stribog structure where LUMEN's entire fleet of Typhoon-class battleships remained on the field to ensure the destruction of the structure, the fleet being destroyed in the process. A great many LUMEN crews' lives were lost. 

SFRIM's Brother Theodosius Savnar was instrumental in recovering and repatriating much of their remains (his own account can be found here), after which we held a memorial service in the Nahyeen system, which I attended. The service was a stark reminder of the reality of starship combat, and how capsuleers tend to disregard the baseliners on their ships when considering losses, instead thinking only in terms of material cost. I was humbled by the service, where emotions ran high, and I was honoured to be a part of a capsuleer alliance that showed such respect for its lower ranks. 

They will be remembered as true Amarr.

In the last month I have participated in a series of fleet actions all over the Empire, which Khimi Harar (LUMEN) has either instigated outright or participated in as a key player, all of which have involved an apparent surge in public heresies, abominations and offences against the Word of God, culminating in the atrocity at Kahah III, which you cannot fail to have noticed since it triggered a subsequent explosion in the activities of the thought-long-dormant Equilibrium of Mankind and its apparently back-from-the-dead leader Ocilan Ardishapur. You will no-doubt have participated in some of the necessary suppressions of pockets of EoM heresy over the last couple of weeks across the wider cluster.

I present an overview of some of those operations below, in as much declassified detail as I am permitted to give:

The Fekhoya Inquisition

LUMEN became aware of a corporation of Triglavian sympathisers called 'Assimilation of Everything Triglavian', operating industrial facilities within the Parses system in the Fekhoya Constellation in Khanid. 

Backstory: LUMEN was very active on the side of EDENCOM during the time of the Triglavian Invasion. After EDENCOM's defeat and the establishment of the abominable 'Pochven' region, LUMEN has sworn to eliminate the Triglavian menace and those sympathetic to it from Amarr space wherever it is found, so leadership filed the necessary 'wardec' with CONCORD (since the Parses system is in high-security space) and we deployed to the Khanid Kingdom for a week to perform the necessary inquisition, suppression and purging of this heresy from the Empire in the name of God.

The operation was a complete success.

You will notice that some of the fleet were using Triglavian-designed vessels during this operation. I am not a spokeswoman for alliance fleet doctrines and the nature of those doctrines is nobody's business...

On the other hand I very much enjoy doing these fleet warp shots with the cam drones:

None of this is satisfying; we do this reluctantly, in service of His Word and of Scripture. If only people would recognise the Light and the Truth of God, and follow the True Path, none of this destruction would be necessary.

After this, we made a triumphant return to our staging system in the Fekhoya Constellation. I contemplated how my former home of Ashmarir was just a few short light-years away from here, and how different life was back then. 

I was so...

The Mayonhen Suppression

My own ancestral homeworld of Mishi IV was orbited by a POCO facility that was assigned to the very same corporation that we had purged from Fekhoya. There were other POCOs in the same Mayonhen constellation that were also assigned to these infidels, these amateurs, these sympathisers, these... edgelords... 

There are several Ni-Kunni in LUMEN so this operation had considerable emotional and symbolic significance for us. We all made the long trip to Aridia to perform this spiritual cleansing.

Again, it was completely successful. 

It was such a pleasure paying a visit to my ancestral homeworld, it's actually been a while, well over a year. We took down POCOs in the Mishi and Avada systems and reestablished our own over Mishi IV, which pleased us greatly. 

It is fascinating to watch these things explode in such a variety of different ways...

Order is once again restored. May His Word guide my ancestral homeworld to peace and prosperity.

The Kahah III Atrocity

I don't need to give you the preamble except to say that members of LUMEN were present at all of the events that preceded this one, but I was unable to participate due to 'operational inconvenience' (jump clone timing, being far out of position etc.).

I was however in the right place at the right time when news of the Avatar bombarding Kahah III filtered into HQ. Our fleet was assembled and despatched within half an hour. A new record, I believe.

It was the largest fleet action I've ever participated in. LUMEN Harbingers and Guardians, and all the other capsuleer fleets involved, against seven Dreads and an Avatar.

It was spellbinding.

Horrifying.

The final engagement with the Avatar took place above the planet's terminator. I can only imagine what it must have looked like from down there.

It was operationally favourable to observe the engagement through the Tactical presentation in my neural link to the capsule and the ship, which gave a sense of detachment from the whole thing, a feeling of not even really being there, of watching it on a holovid.

All those lives, reduced to sprites, icons on a grid. The triviality of it. 

The fog of war indeed...

You will know by now that the Avatar had the time to fire several rounds of its Doomsday weapon at the planet's surface, laying waste to large parts of the habitable landmasses.

But with all our temporary capsuleer alliance's combined firepower, it was inevitable that the Avatar would fall eventually.

It was spectacular.

Relief efforts on the surface of Kahah III are ongoing, and will be for some time. There will be some evacuations; and much repair and restoration of the planet's biosphere after the Avatar caused a nuclear winter to exist. It will return to normal, eventually, because it is God's will that nature - the universe - always wins in the end.

But these events are all the evidence you need that dark hearts still exist in New Eden and they must be and will be purged from the Empire.
